Drug Store News - Topamax approved for new indication
The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new indication for the anti-epileptic drug, Topamax (topiramate) Tablets, as an add-on treatment for pediatric patients ages 2 to 16 who experience partial onset seizures. These affect nearly half of the 750,000 patients under the age of 18 who have epilepsy, according to the Epilepsy Foundation.

Topamax is the first “new-generation” antiepileptic drug to be approved for the treatment of partial onset seizures in patients as young as 2, according to Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, which markets the drug. Topamax was first approved by the FDA in 1996 as an add-on treatment for adults with partial onset seizures.
